The sudden flurry of activity in membership was short lived when I discovered that they were spam robots. They and their spam posts have been deleted. It appears there is a vulnerability in the present version of the SMF forum, and I will try to get the update installed. Hopefully that will resolve this issue. In the time being, I've switched the new account registration so that it requires admin approval.
